Hans Gerling is an Advanced Level competitor with top finishes at FEI events. He has a consistent and proven training record, taking many off-the-track horses through the Advanced Level.

Hans grew up in the horse-saturated community of northern Baltimore County, Maryland. Foxhunting and Pony Club provided an early education with horses. Gradually his focus shifted to eventing and he competed in his first three-day at age 15.

At Sunset Hill, Hans focuses on training event riders and horses of all ages and experience levels from young riders and adult amateurs to FEI competitors.

Hans has a degree in Pyschology from the Univerity of Virginia. While attending college, Hans trained with Phillip Dutton, Bonnie Mosser, and Stuart Black. After graduation, Hans began training with Olympian David O’Connor. He currently works with Jan Byyny.

Career Highlights include:

  • Gold and Silver medals at the North American Young Rider Championships, considered the Young Rider “Olympics” of the western hemisphere.

  • Long-listed for the Athens Olympics and the World Equestrian Games.

  • Individual Gold Medal at the U.S. Junior Olympics.

  • Twice named the Maryland Young Rider of the Year.

  • Competing McCuan Mario on behalf of Patrick McCuan and Sunset Hill. “Mario” is a 6-year-old Dutch Warmblood/English TB cross and is currently showing at Training. After only two weeks together, Hans and Mario finished 2nd at the Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington.
